knowledge cutoff

The fixed date after which a model's training data ends -- it has no knowledge of anything that happened later.

A model's knowledge cutoff is the date its training data collection ended. The model has no knowledge of events, facts, or developments after that date, and cannot distinguish "I don't know this" from "this happened after my cutoff" without being told -- one of the two core reasons (alongside hallucination) a model's own knowledge isn't sufficient on its own for many tasks.

Examples

  • A model with a knowledge cutoff of early 2024 has no way of knowing who won an election held in 2025, and can't tell you that on its own unless it's told its own cutoff date.
