A piece of text or a retrieved document is relevant when it actually bears on the current task or question, as opposed to being off-topic or unrelated -- retrieval systems are scored largely on how well they surface relevant results.

Examples

  • A search for "Python list sorting" should return relevant results about the sort() method, not general programming history.
