A rectangular array of numbers, with shape $m\times n$ .

A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers arranged in rows and columns. A matrix with $m$ rows and $n$ columns has shape (or order) $m\times n$ — rows first, columns second. Entry $a_{ij}$ is the entry in row $i$ , column $j$ . A matrix is square when $m=n$ .
