amphiboly

An argument that relies on a sentence's ambiguous grammar.

Amphiboly is a fallacy that exploits an ambiguity of sentence structure rather than of a single word, drawing a conclusion from the reading the speaker did not intend.

Examples

  • A sign reads "Dogs must be carried on the escalator," and someone concludes they may not use the escalator without a dog.
