conversion

Swapping the subject and predicate terms of a categorical statement.

Conversion switches the subject and predicate terms. It gives an equivalent statement for E ("no S are P" to "no P are S") and I ("some S are P" to "some P are S") statements, but not for A or O statements.

Examples

  • "No cats are reptiles" converts to the equivalent "No reptiles are cats."

  • "All cats are mammals" does not convert: "All mammals are cats" is false.
