main connective

The connective whose scope is the whole sentence.

The main connective of a compound sentence is the last connective used in building it, the one whose scope is the entire sentence. It decides what kind of sentence it is: a negation, conjunction, disjunction, conditional, or biconditional.

Examples

  • The main connective of (P ∧ Q) → R is the conditional.

  • The main connective of ¬(P → R) is the negation.
