premise indicator

A word or phrase that usually signals a reason is coming.

A premise indicator is an expression such as because, since, for, given that, or as shown by that typically introduces a premise. Indicators are clues, not proof: the same words can appear in explanations and in sentences about time.

Examples

  • "Since the forecast calls for rain, we should bring umbrellas": since introduces the reason.

  • "Given that the store is closed, we'll order online."
