rule of inference
A rule saying which new line may be written from which earlier lines.
A rule of inference licenses writing a sentence of a certain form in a proof, given earlier available lines (or subproofs) of certain forms. Every rule preserves truth: it never leads from true lines to a false one.
Examples
Conditional elimination: from A → B and A, write B.
