tu quoque

Dismissing a claim because the person making it doesn't follow it.

Tu quoque ("you too") is the form of ad hominem that rejects a claim or piece of advice because the speaker acts against it. Whether the speaker is consistent tells you about the speaker, not about whether the claim is true.

Examples

  • "My doctor says I should exercise more, but she never exercises, so I don't need to."
