approximate value

A value that stands in for the exact answer because the exact one is unavailable or impractical to compute.

An approximate value \tilde{x} is a number offered in place of an exact value x, produced by truncating an infinite process, rounding a stored number, or running an algorithm that only ever gets closer and closer rather than landing exactly.

Examples

  • 1.41421356 is an approximate value for \sqrt2.
