Free public beta until December 4, 2026: every course is open, no card needed. After that, the first chapter of each course stays free and full access is a one-time $39 ($19 for up to 100 founding members chosen for helpful feedback). Your progress is kept. How the beta works

fixed point

A value p where a function g leaves its input unchanged: g(p) = p.

A fixed point of a function g is a value p with g(p) = p. Rearranging a root-finding equation f(x)=0 into the form x = g(x) turns the search for a root of f into a search for a fixed point of g, computed by the iteration x_{n+1} = g(x_n).

Examples

  • g(x)=\cos x has a fixed point near p\approx0.739, since \cos(0.739)\approx0.739.
