constraint

A condition a solution must satisfy — an equation or inequality that x has to obey.

A constraint restricts which x are allowed as candidate solutions. An equality constraint has the form h(x)=0; an inequality constraint has the form g(x)\le0 (or \ge0, convertible to \le0 by negating). A problem with no constraints at all is unconstrained.
