sum rule
If a choice is made from disjoint groups, the total count is the sum of each group's option count.
If a choice falls into one of k mutually exclusive categories with n_1, n_2, \ldots, n_k options each, the total number of outcomes is n_1 + n_2 + \cdots + n_k.
