breaking change

A change to a library that can stop code that uses it from compiling or working.

A breaking change removes or changes something users rely on (a public item, a signature, a trait impl, an enum's exhaustiveness); under semver it needs a new MAJOR version.

Examples

  • Adding a variant to a public enum is breaking: a user's match that listed every old variant now fails with E0004.
