alignment

The rule that a value of a type should start at an address that is a multiple of a certain number, often its own size.

A type's alignment is a power of two A such that objects of the type are placed at addresses divisible by A (alignof(T) in C++).

Examples

  • An 8-byte long is aligned when its address is a multiple of 8: 0x1008 is aligned, 0x100C is not.
