global symbol
A name other object files may refer to; a local symbol, by contrast, is visible only inside its own file.
A symbol's binding is global when the linker may resolve references from other object files to it (.globl in GNU as, PUBLIC in MASM, external linkage in C++) and local when it is private to its object file (static or an anonymous namespace).
