overflow flag

The flag that is 1 when the last signed result did not fit and came out with the wrong sign.

OF (x86-64) and V (ARM64) are set when the result of an addition or subtraction, read as two's complement, lies outside the representable signed range.

Examples

  • In 8 bits, 0x7F + 0x01 gives 0x80 with OF = 1: 127 + 1 is not −128.
