pipeline stall
Holding an instruction back for a cycle or more so a hazard can clear; the empty slot that moves down the pipeline is called a bubble.
A stall holds an instruction (and those behind it) in its stage while a hazard resolves, inserting a bubble (a no-operation) into the following stage; each stall cycle adds one cycle to the program's total.
