retirement
The moment an instruction's result becomes official, in program order, once everything before it is done; wrong-path work is dropped before it gets here.
Retirement (commit) removes the oldest completed operation from the reorder buffer and makes its effect architectural (freeing the previous physical register mapping, releasing its store); faults and mispredictions are acted on at retirement, which keeps exceptions precise.
