system call
A request from a program to the operating system's kernel to do something the program isn't allowed to do itself, such as write to a file or end the program.
A system call is a controlled transfer from user mode to a kernel entry point, made with a dedicated instruction (syscall, svc, ecall), that performs a service selected by a number and returns a result to the caller.
