translation lookaside buffer
A small, very fast cache inside the processor that remembers recent address translations, so most accesses never need to read the page table.
The translation lookaside buffer caches recent virtual-page-to-frame translations with their permissions (split L1 instruction and data TLBs, a larger L2 TLB); a hit translates in parallel with the L1 cache lookup.
