bounding box
The smallest axis-aligned rectangle that contains a shape.
A shape's bounding box is the smallest axis-aligned rectangle containing every point of its boundary -- a cheap, coarse stand-in for a shape's location and extent, used throughout later chapters (object detection, tracking) wherever a full contour is more precision than the task needs.
Examples
A detector reports a person's location as the rectangle from (120,40) to (210,300) rather than the full outline of their body.
