encoding

The rule for turning characters into bytes and back.

A character encoding maps characters to byte sequences; .NET's default for files is UTF-8 without a byte-order mark.

Examples

  • Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes("café") is 5 bytes: UTF-8 stores é in two.
