bilateral filter

An edge-preserving smoothing filter weighting neighbors by both spatial closeness and intensity similarity.

The bilateral filter weights each neighbor by the product of a spatial (domain) Gaussian weight and a range weight comparing neighbor and center intensity, smoothing flat regions while resisting blur across genuine edges.
