Gaussian smoothing

Gaussian smoothing convolves an image with the Gaussian kernel, its standard deviation \sigma controlling smoothing strength -- a small \sigma gives light smoothing, a large \sigma gives heavy smoothing, with kernel size chosen roughly K\approx 6\sigma.
