non-maximum suppression
Thinning a gradient-magnitude image to single-pixel width by keeping only local maxima along the gradient direction.
Non-maximum suppression keeps a pixel only if its magnitude is greater than or equal to both of its neighbors along the local gradient direction, zeroing every other pixel -- thinning a multi-pixel-wide response to a single-pixel ridge.
