impulse response

An LTI system's output when its input is a single unit impulse, written h[n].

An LTI system's impulse response h[n] is its output when driven by a single unit impulse \delta[n]. Because any signal decomposes into scaled, shifted impulses (the sifting property), h[n] alone determines the system's response to any input, via the convolution sum.
