command

A message telling a device to do something.

A command is a message addressed to one device or group asking it to act; unlike telemetry it flows downward and usually needs an acknowledgement.

Examples

  • "Open vent 2" or "set the target to 24 °C" travels down from the back end to the greenhouse node, which must acknowledge it.

  • If a command's acknowledgement is lost and the command is resent, "set target to 22 °C" is safe to apply twice, but "add 5 litres of water" is not.
