device identity
What a device is (its ID and the secret that proves it), as opposed to where it currently is on the network.
A device identity is a stable identifier bound to a credential -- a key pair and certificate or a per-device secret -- that the service authenticates; it is independent of the device's IP address, which can change.

The ID
gh-a1b2c3d4e5f6, built from the chip's MAC, is the node's client ID and topic level; its password or certificate proves the ID is its own.If the node moves from 192.168.1.37 to .52, its identity is unchanged; only its address moved.
