DHCP lease
An IP address a router lends a device for a limited time.
A DHCP lease is a time-limited loan of an IP address from the network's DHCP server; the device must renew it, and a failed renewal ends its connectivity.
Examples
When the greenhouse sensor joins, the router lends it 192.168.1.37 with a lease of, say, 24 hours.
At half the lease time the sensor asks the router again, and the router's ACK extends the lease so the address stays the same.
