exponential backoff
Waiting longer after each failed retry, usually doubling the wait each time.
Exponential backoff schedules retry n after a wait of base × factor^n, so repeated failures space out quickly instead of hammering a service that is already struggling.
Examples
With base 1 s and factor 2, the waits after an outage are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 s, and so on until the cap.
In a 600 s outage, backoff with a 60 s cap makes 14 attempts instead of the 120 a fixed 5 s wait makes.
