gateway

A box that sits between devices and the rest of the system, translating, buffering or filtering their messages.

An IoT gateway connects local devices (often on radios like BLE or Zigbee) to the wider network, translating protocols and buffering or processing data at the edge.

Examples

  • A Raspberry Pi that hears Zigbee or Bluetooth sensors and passes their readings on over Wi-Fi is a gateway.

  • A gateway can buffer greenhouse readings while the internet link is down and forward them when it comes back.
