IoT device

An embedded device that talks to other devices or services over a network.

An IoT device is an embedded system that exchanges data over a network -- sending telemetry, receiving commands, reporting its state -- as part of a larger system.

Examples

  • A greenhouse sensor that sends its temperature to a laptop over Wi-Fi is an IoT device; an oven timer that never talks to anything is only embedded.

  • A water meter that reports its reading over a network, so nobody walks the street to read dials, is an IoT device.
