key injection station

A station that writes factory-made keys into devices and must never keep them.

A key injection station generates or holds keys outside the device and writes them into it during manufacture; because it sees private keys, it must be trusted, audited and must not retain them.

Examples

  • For a device too small to generate its own key, a key-injection station writes a factory-made key over USB and must then delete it.

  • An injected key has been in the station, the cable and the device, so the station keeping a log of keys would defeat the point.
