router

A device that passes packets between networks.

A router forwards packets between networks, choosing each packet's next hop from its destination address and a routing table.

Examples

  • The home router at 192.168.1.1 forwards the sensor's packets from the 192.168.1.0/24 network out to the internet.

  • A router keeps a routing table; the home router's last entry, 0.0.0.0/0, sends everything else to the internet provider.
