TCP

The protocol that gives two programs a reliable, ordered stream of bytes over an unreliable network.

TCP provides a connection-oriented, reliable, ordered byte stream between two sockets using sequence numbers, acknowledgements, retransmission, flow control and congestion control.

Examples

  • The sensor's connection to the broker on port 1883 uses TCP, so readings arrive in order and lost segments are resent.

  • TCP turns the lossy Wi-Fi link between the greenhouse and the laptop into a reliable, ordered stream of bytes.
