torn write

A write cut off by a power loss, leaving neither the old nor the new data.

A torn write is a partially completed write to storage interrupted by power loss, leaving a record that matches neither its previous nor its intended contents.

Examples

  • A power cut while rewriting the 4 KiB sector holding a fan controller's settings can leave it part old, part new and part 0xFF.

  • A CRC stored with the record lets the next boot spot a torn write, but it can't put the data back.
