checked exception

An exception the compiler makes you catch or declare, such as IOException.

Every Throwable except RuntimeException, Error and their subclasses is checked; code that can throw one must catch it or list it in a throws clause.

Examples

  • Files.readString(path) declares throws IOException, so the caller must catch or declare it.
