defective

An eigenvalue (or matrix) whose geometric multiplicity falls short of its algebraic multiplicity.

An eigenvalue is defective when its geometric multiplicity is strictly smaller than its algebraic multiplicity — the eigenspace is too thin for what the characteristic polynomial promised. A matrix with any defective eigenvalue has fewer than n independent eigenvectors and so is not diagonalizable; no invertible P can make P^{-1}AP diagonal.
