free variable

A variable corresponding to a free (non-pivot) column; a genuine degree of freedom.

The variable a free (non-pivot) column corresponds to is a free variable. Free variables are the only genuine "degrees of freedom" a solution set has: they can be assigned any value, and every basic variable then adjusts to match.
