pivot column
A column of row echelon form that contains a leading entry.
Once a matrix is in row echelon form, a column is a pivot column if it contains a leading entry of some row, and a free column otherwise. If a system in n variables reduces to r pivot columns, r variables are basic and the remaining n-r are free.
