distributed term

A term the statement says something about every member of.

A term in a categorical statement is distributed if the statement says something about every member of the class it names. A statements distribute the subject; E statements distribute both terms; I statements distribute neither; O statements distribute the predicate.

Examples

  • In "No fish are mammals," both "fish" and "mammals" are distributed.

  • In "Some birds are flightless," neither term is distributed.
