modus ponens

From "if P, then Q" and P, conclude Q.

Modus ponens ("the way of affirming") is the valid form: if P, then Q; P; therefore Q. The second premise affirms the antecedent, and the conclusion is the consequent.

Examples

  • "If the light is green, we can go. The light is green. So we can go."
