build profile

Debug (fast to build, checked) or release (optimized) settings for a build.

A profile is a named set of compiler settings; dev (debug) builds quickly with checks on, release optimizes (cargo build --release).

Examples

  • A program that checks cfg!(debug_assertions) prints This is a debug build. under cargo run and This is a release build. under cargo run --release.

  • level += 10 on a u8 holding 250 panics in a debug build but wraps to 4 in a release build.
