convex hull
The smallest convex polygon that contains a shape's entire boundary.
A shape's convex hull is the smallest convex polygon containing every point of its boundary -- equivalently, the shape traced by stretching a rubber band around it. It is always at least as large as the shape's own contour, and the two coincide exactly when the shape is already convex.
Examples
A hand's contour has deep concave notches between the fingers, but its convex hull is one smooth shape stretched tight around the fingertips.
