hardware-in-the-loop testing
Running the real firmware on a real board while a computer controls and checks everything around it.
Hardware-in-the-loop testing runs production firmware on target hardware in a rig whose power, radio environment, inputs and observations are controlled by a test runner, so device behaviour under real conditions can be asserted automatically.
Examples
A HIL rig flashes the bench node, cuts power with a relay, switches off a test access point and checks it rejoins the broker.
Because rigs are slow and fragile, HIL tests run nightly or before a release, and a rig failure means "rerun and investigate".
