test pyramid

Many cheap fast tests at the bottom, a few slow expensive ones at the top.

The test pyramid arranges tests by cost: host unit tests, host integration tests, on-target tests, hardware-in-the-loop tests and a field pilot, with each fact tested at the lowest level that can observe it.

Examples

  • Three hundred unit tests of the backoff and offline queue run in under a second; 300 hardware-in-the-loop tests at 3 minutes each would take 15 hours.

  • The bench node's pyramid runs from host unit tests, through integration and on-target tests, to HIL rigs and one field pilot per release.
