proposition

The claim a sentence makes, apart from the words used to make it.

A proposition is what a statement says: the content that is true or false. Different sentences, even in different languages, can express the same proposition, and one ambiguous sentence can express two different propositions.

Examples

  • "It's raining" and "Rain is falling" express the same proposition.

  • "I saw her duck" can express two different propositions.
