statement

A sentence that is either true or false.

A statement is a declarative sentence that makes a claim about how things are, and so has a truth value: it is either true or false, even if nobody knows which. Questions, commands, requests, and exclamations are not statements.

Examples

  • "The library closes at nine" is a statement (true or false, whichever it is).

  • "Close the door" and "Is it raining?" are not statements: neither is true or false.
