truth-functional

Depending only on the truth values of the parts.

A connective is truth-functional when the truth value of the compound it builds depends only on the truth values of its component sentences, not on what they mean. All five connectives of sentential logic are truth-functional; "because" is not.

Examples

  • Knowing whether P and Q are true doesn't tell you whether "P because Q" is true.
